Dwerja is an incredible bay located in the West of Gozo in the pittoresk town on San Lawrenz. Dwejra is well known with tourists that frequent the island due to Famous sports such as:
The Azur window also known as (it-Tiqa tad-Dwejra), was a 28 Meter high natural formed arch located on the West of Gozo. The Limestone feature was one of the many attractions of Dwejra and Gozo as a whole until it collapsed due to bad weather on the 8th of March 2017.
The Inland Sea is another amazing natural phenomena found in Dwejra. Qawra as it is sometimes called in Maltese is a lagoon of seawater on the island which is linked to the sea (Mediterranean Sea) through a naturally formed arch-shaped opening.
It was most probably formed because of a geological fault in the limestone originally created a cave and by time the roof collapsed forming the opening and creating the lagoon itself.
The Fungus Rock which is commonly known to the Maltese as il- Gebla tal- Genreal (General's Rock) is a small islet with height of 60 meters. It is entirely made out of limestone. The Knights of St John discovered that on the flat surface rock grew what is known as Maltese Fungus (giving it the name Fungus Rock). The plant looks like a parasitic flower, not a fungus that has a repulsive smell. Doctors at the time (of the Knights of St John) believed that it had medicinal properties. The. Knights used it as a styptic dressing for wounds and a cure for dysentery.
Another attraction that attracts a lot of divers to Dwejra is the Blue Hole which was overlooking the Azur Window. It starts a 10-meter wide inland sea pool leading to a large chack into the open sea. Imiditly after you start the dive you will witness a naturally formed rock arch with clear blue which will lead you through the arch into the open sea.
After passing the arch you will enter a tunnel with amazing rock formations and filled with incredible marine life. such as Moray Eel, Lobsters, parrotfish and Schools of Brema amongst many others.
Hedding towards the reef wall will give you the opportunity to swim through a large vertical crack in the reef which starts at a dept of 18-metes which goes up to a coral garden which is located at 4-Meters. If one does not feel comfortable swimming out to the open sea one can simply turn back and visit the caves which are located at the far end of the blue hole.
