About ix-Xwejni

Xwejni Bay ( Il-Bajja tax-Xwejni) is a small bay located in the northern part of the Gozitan island. Xwejni forms part of the village of Zebbug. It is used as a bathing bay and starting point for divers. The small pebbly bay is located next to Qbajar Bay from one side and Wied l-Ghasri on the other side.

Qolla l-Bajda Battery:

This is an artillery battery which is on the east side of the bay. The battery was built between 1715 and 1716 by the Order of the Knights of Saint John, This was one of the series of coastal fortifications that the Knights build across the Maltese islands. The battery retained its original layout until the 1970s, this is when it was converted into a snack bar and disco known by the locals as “The Rook” this meant that major alterations were made to the internals of the battery. In the present day, the building is abandoned and in a dilapidated state due to the legal battle between the government and the private company that used to occupy the building.
